I like that my daughter feels she can talk to me, come to me for advice, share private stories and talk things through. I'm an open minded mum.
I thought it unusual that she was willingly helping me out with some chores one day (she must want something!) then while doing her good deed she took the opportunity...
'mum can I ask you something?'
'What do you think is a reasonable age gap between a couple?'
She carried on with the chores in the most natural way possible and I composed my best poker face awaiting the dramatic music to our scene indicating a shocking revelation, but it didn't come. Instead, I laughed (hopefully in a not so nervous way) and teased that I knew where this one was going! But of course I was wrong, she was asking about a 'friend' of hers and so filled me in.
He's 23 and she's 17 (my daughters age strangely) I did the sensible thing and reassured her that age gaps can seem worse when people are young and pointed out there are five years between me and my husband (a decent enough age gap to allow him to mature!) I swallowed hard and told her if her 'friend' and this guy are happy, comfortable and safe then it's less of a worry. ( I also mentioned respect, consideration, honesty and any other wise old words I could get away with putting into one sentence!)
And there it was, the beginning of something exciting for her and secretly nerve wrecking for me!
