One of my personal targets is to put my newly discovered hobby to good use. Yes, my name is Sarah and I like to knit and crochet!
My love for baking has previously incited the extremely cheeky label 'Granny' (I'm in my 30's!) So as you can imagine my knitting and crocheting only adds fuel to the fire! I'm a beginner therefore an expert in basic scarves and blankets! So I've excelled myself in deciding to crochet hats for premature babies, cue proud face. They're so quick and it's only taken me twenty hats to remember the pattern without looking (yes I did say twenty! I told you I'm a beginner!) I'm going to donate them to my local hospital.
Also on my charity radar is an FGM charity that is organised by my local hospital, they campaign against FGM and help new mums in Kenya. So I'm going to type 'easy patterns' into a search engine and see what I can do!
What better way to spend a friends thirtieth birthday than indulging in a spa day, a chocolate decadence spa day to be exact! It's funny how the words 'chocolate decadence' persuaded us to book in! A relaxing spa day with hot chocolate and chocolate cake included? what's there to think about?!
We'd booked massages and we each went with our therapist. (Thankfully female, I once went on a hen do where one of the girls had a male therapist and we were genuinely confused as to how we would feel about it!) I went into the cosy, relaxing room, sounds of the ocean swishing around me and she asked me to strip from the waist up while she started to busy herself with the lotions and potions.
She didn't leave the room.
Apparently I was supposed to get my bits out in front of a stranger! Now I'm no prude but I am the person who wouldn't dream of going topless on a beach! Usually they leave the room and give you just enough time to strip like your life depended on it, jump on the bed wiggling around in a non ladylike fashion whilst you try to lay face down and cover your modesty! (Try it, it's not easy!) My hesitation caused her to look around and she asked,
"would you like me to leave the room?"
"Yes!" My pathetic squeak of an answer must have made her giggle inside as she sneaked out and left me to the challenge of getting undressed, settled and looking un-flustered before she returned and caught me face-planting the bed half naked!
As she massaged me into a restful state, I wondered if others would have done the same, wondered if I'd offended her profession, wondered if I was going to be the subject of the sniggering staffroom that afternoon!
I like that my daughter feels she can talk to me, come to me for advice, share private stories and talk things through. I'm an open minded mum.
I thought it unusual that she was willingly helping me out with some chores one day (she must want something!) then while doing her good deed she took the opportunity...
'mum can I ask you something?'
'What do you think is a reasonable age gap between a couple?'
She carried on with the chores in the most natural way possible and I composed my best poker face awaiting the dramatic music to our scene indicating a shocking revelation, but it didn't come. Instead, I laughed (hopefully in a not so nervous way) and teased that I knew where this one was going! But of course I was wrong, she was asking about a 'friend' of hers and so filled me in.
He's 23 and she's 17 (my daughters age strangely) I did the sensible thing and reassured her that age gaps can seem worse when people are young and pointed out there are five years between me and my husband (a decent enough age gap to allow him to mature!) I swallowed hard and told her if her 'friend' and this guy are happy, comfortable and safe then it's less of a worry. ( I also mentioned respect, consideration, honesty and any other wise old words I could get away with putting into one sentence!)
And there it was, the beginning of something exciting for her and secretly nerve wrecking for me!
