Do you remember the TV series Friends? the one where someone steals fries from Joey's plate?
You know how it is, someone thinks 'trying' (I'd say stealing) from someone else's plate is acceptable and meanwhile the person who owns the food is snarling at the mere thought!
I recently caught up with a friend over coffee and a muffin and mid conversation she leaned in and stole, yes stole, a chunk of my muffin! 😒 She had her own but that obviously wasn't enough! Food theft is illegal in dining etiquette surely?! and as pretty woman would say, "big mistake, huge!" It's my muffin, eat your own or just ask if you want to try mine! (though I'm making no promises!)
If you used to watch Gavin & Stacey you'll remember the scene where the family are ordering a takeaway and everyone wants to order loads and just dig in. Smithy has none of it and has a good rant about his food being his and his only! I kind of get Smithy! Don't get me wrong, if we're at a buffet or Tapas then share away but don't just lean in and take your pick from my plate!
It also reminds me of the time I was eating a delicious, dressed crab in a restaurant and drooling over how tasty it was, when a friend thought it the best time to tell me about his last crab. If it had been a story of culinary delight I would have appreciated it but when the tale included the words, bad, off, sickness and diarrhoea, it seemed to have tarnished the meal somehow!
I believe it's food etiquette, some might say it's greed...
