Last week was an amazing week, why? you ask.. I'll tell you why,
I found my Dad!
I know! bloody amazing right? I've spent my life knowing my Dad's name but not kowing him and not seeing him since I was a tot. Mostly I got on with life, occasionally wondering what he was like, what he was doing. Sometimes I wanted to find him, sometimes I wasn't bothered. Maybe that sounds harsh but it really depended on how I was feeling at any given time!
A year ago, I met the guy (Potential Dad, aka PD!) for the first time that I can remember. I also met his children. Big stuff! So since last year, we've been in touch, we've started to build relationships but I still never knew for sure. I could see resemblances, as could others, but was it because we were looking for them? My potential brother and sisters could see similarities between us all too but nothing was definite.
I decided that I would never settle unless I had a tick in the box in my head and in true talk show style, I bought a DNA test. It's quite odd really, we visited the new family and sat casually chatting whilst we swabbed our cheeks!
Isn't it bizarre that you can order a test online, swab your cheeks, post the samples and receive your results by email a few days later! Bizarre and incredible! We get on well so we all vowed to stay in touch if the result was negative, all the while hoping it would be positive!
Three days I spent refreshing my emails! One of the days, I stupidly checked my emails whilst walking home and saw one from the lab. Ignoring my own rule of only opening the email at home (Who knows what my reaction would be! It was quite possible I'd either cry or jig in the street!)
I opened it and frantically scoured the content whilst stood in the middle of the pavement. It turned out it was just an acknowledgement of receiving the samples! Luckily the email also specified a time and date, which meant I could ease off refreshing my inbox every five minutes! (Okay maybe I still did it!) The next day at lunchtime, my phone rings and it's PD (Potential Dad)
I answer nervously and excitedly,
"Have you seen it?!" He asks frantically
"No, tell me tell me!" I say as giddy as a kipper (how giddy is an actual kipper?!)
"I'm your Dad!" He declares. I can tell he's smiling.
Squeals, laughs and cheers fill the room, from him, me and my family who are sat with me.
It's a strange and great feeling discovering you're definitely from someone, part of someone and part of a whole new family!
Amongst the phone calls of excitement, it was arranged that my Dad, brother and neice would visit the following day. We had a scorcher of a day, a picnic by the lake and the champagne that had spent three years waiting for a worthy occasion, finally got cracked open! We toasted family and had a special day together.
So there you have it, I definitely have a Dad, a new brother, two new sisters and that's not accounting for anyone else in the new family!
I'm looking forward to a future of learning about eachother, building relationships and making memories. Now, if you're wondering why I would share all of this with you, if you're thinking this is a private thing. I can assure you that this is actually an amazing thing, and if I could climb onto the roof I would indeed shout it from the roof top!
Let me tell you, it's not just a cliche, life really is short, so do what you need to do ☺
