I've just read an article from thisisinsider, a round of applause for the health reporter Lisa Ryan!
When I was pregnant (twenty years ago!) there were many things that hadn't been mentioned to me. Things that may have been considered private, gory even, but real nonetheless. I didn't enjoy being pregnant, I couldn't reach my feet, going to the loo was a tale in itself and as for morning sickness, morning had nothing to do with it! And why oh why did no-one warn me that I would still have a bump?! I genuinely thought my deflated balloon of a tummy meant something was wrong!
I learned that people can be quick to say 'you're not the first person to be pregnant you know' whilst watching me cup vomit to my mouth! and as for post pregnancy... wow! someone please write a book, a true life account of what to expect. I have friends who adored being pregnant and I'm pleased for them (and jealous!) I'm not naive, I understand each person's experience is different and mine was certainly different to what I'd read! I toyed with the idea of sharing my experience on here and I debated listing some keywords just to give you an idea, but I decided against both for two reasons.
Firstly not everyone will have to endure a rubbish pregnancy and secondly I don't want to scare people off the idea! Trust me it really is worth it. That said, there should definitely be more info out there, that way we don't have to approach our health visitor, scared witless about another thing that just happened to our post pregnancy body! I suppose the real reason there are no 'this could happen' accounts out there is because if women knew about the potential yukkiness (my own word) not all of them would bother!
So to end my little rant, I'd just like to say that when you look at a new mum with her post pregnancy bump and are possibly tempted to judge, look again. Look at that fabulous woman and what she has produced, what she has grown, and finally appreciate that she and her partner have made the most amazing creation ever!
Thank you to an amazing mum I know for letting me use her scan picture. X
